FROM ANCIENT BRAIDS TO CONTEMPORARY FADES (2025)
In his third solo exhibition, Stanley Emeka Onah explores how Black hairstyling has served as a historical archive of Black history. Beyond the aesthetic appearance, hairstyling has defined poignant moments in history and continues to do so in present day.
Spanning centuries, the thirteen oil paintings and four resin sculptures trace hairstyles from ancestral Africa to modern-day fades. Through vibrant primary colours, rich symbolism, and tactile textures, Onah reveals Black hair as a record of identity, survival, resistance and culture across time.
